At The Durkovic Group, we are passionate about the arts. We are proud to support numerous cultural organizations and art museums throughout the Los Angeles area. One of our favorite institutions will always be the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). They are the biggest museum around and offer so much to see and do. As the calendar turns to September 2023, we are looking forward to some of the current special installations and upcoming exhibits at LACMA. Here are some we can’t wait to see:
Matthew Barney: REPRESSIA (Decline)
Through January 7, 2024
Matthew Barney is the ultimate physical expressionist. He’s known throughout the world for his unique solo installations that have involved his own body in unusual ways. REPRESSIA (Decline) is a room-size sculptural installation that features two videos. Barney puts his body through strenuous athletic activities with interesting outcomes. This is truly a unique artistic experience that will be the next-best thing to seeing one of his live demonstrations. Learn more.
Eternal Medium: Seeing the World in Stone
Through February 11, 2024
Stone is sometimes an underappreciated medium in the art world. This display features a diverse set of stone pieces, set against comparable art examples in other media. It is a fascinating exhibit that shows the cultural importance and captivating beautiful of stone art throughout history. Learn more.
Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction
September 17, 2023 – January 21, 2024
Abstract art and woven textiles have an interesting relationship if you look back through history. They have intersected in the past century with visionary artists using pre-loom weaving techniques to create some amazing works. This collection brings over 150 woven pieces from the world of art, fashion, design and crafts to show their cultural significance. Learn more.
The World Made Wondrous:
The Dutch Collector’s Cabinet and the Politics of Possession
September 17, 2023 – March 3, 2024
This exhibit is designed to recreate a fictive 17th-century Dutch art collector’s cabinet. It includes more than 300 works, including sculptures, prints, paintings, taxidermy, shells and gems. The installation seeks to examine the political and colonial histories European collecting practices in the 1600s. The exhibit also features significant contributions from four wonderful contemporary artists: Jennifer Ling Datchuk, Todd Gray, Sithabile Mlotshwa and Uyra Sodoma. Learn more.
These are some of the most recently added and upcoming exhibits to see at LACMA. There are many others that have been on display since earlier this year, and several others yet to come this winter. If you haven’t been to the museum in awhile, now would be a great time to plan your next visit.
