We are in the middle of Latino Heritage Month, which started on September 15 and runs through October 15 each year. Latino culture is so integral to the history and spirit of Los Angeles. It can be celebrated any day of the year around here. This month brings extra meaning with many festivals, concerts and art exhibitions devoted to Latin-American life. Here are some Latino Heritage Month events coming up in the next few weeks:
Al Sur de la Frontera
The Ford • October 6
This musical celebration will feature traditional music from the Sierra Zapoteca of Oaxaca, paired with experimental electronica music and interpretive performance art. Many influential Latino artists will take part in this incredible concert that brings together classic Latin music with modern artistic expression. Learn more. Academy Museum of Motion Pictures • October 6 – 27
October’s edition of the Academy Museum’s Drop-In Tours series will spotlight Latinx contributors to film and filmmaking. These drop-in style gallery conversations are free with museum admission from 1:00-3:00pm each Friday through October. Featured articles will include documentarian Lourdes Portillo, Moquita y Mari, Dolores Huerta and Guillermo del Toro. Learn more.
Muertos Art Walk
Olvera Street • October 7
The Olvera Street Muertos Artwalk will be celebrating its 8th year. Art, clothing, jewelry, face painting and other activities will be inspired by Día de los Muertos. Artists from all over greater Los Angeles will converge on historic Olvera Street. There is already so much to see and do here, so this will be an even more exciting day focused on these traditions. El Velorio
Plaza de la Raza • October 14
Plaza de la Raza is an incredible cultural center in Los Angeles. They provide many educational programs and special events throughout the year, with a focus on Latino history and culture. The 13th annual El Velorio celebrates the rich traditions of Día de los Muertos. There will be a special art exhibition, live music and much more for the full family two enjoy. Learn more.
Qué lo Qué
LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes • October 14
This is a special pop-up art exhibition at the Plaza. It is a celebration of Dominican art, culture and heritage. The exhibition will feature art pieces and live discussions with artists who are behind these beautiful works. Learn more.
Día de los Muertos

Many Day of the Dead events will be taking place alongside Halloween throughout the Los Angeles area. From sugar skulls and face paint to Latin music and art, it is truly a wonderful experience to immerse yourself in this cultural celebration.
