The Los Angeles Conservancy recently announced their 2024 Preservation Awards winners for the most impactful preservation projects throughout Southern California. This organization is dedicated to historical preservation, local heritage and sustainable restoration solutions. You can attend the awards celebration on Thursday, May 16 at the historic Egyptian Theatre. Learn more and get your tickets here.

10 winners in a variety of categories will be recognized with Preservation Awards that evening. We wanted to take this opportunity to highlight a few that inspired us.

Netflix Egyptian Theatre

The host venue for this event is also one of the top award winners. It originally opened in 1922 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. After many years of vacancy and neglect, Netflix purchased the property and partnered with the American Cinematheque in 2020. They restored this once-great theatre to its former glory, with modern upgrades for technology and sustainability. Learn more.

Alcoholism Center for Women (ACW)

Founded in 1975, the ACW marked an important shift in Los Angeles’ gay liberation movement. This center was founded to support women and lesbians struggling with alcohol addiction. Since then, the center’s buildings and recovery home have been recognized for their historical and cultural significance. Conservation is ongoing and the LA Conservancy was proud to recognize their efforts with this award. Learn more.

Rubel Castle Historic District

One of the more unique places in the San Gabriel Valley is the Rubel Castle Historic District. This whimsical and monumental piece of folk art was created by castle-building enthusiast Michael Clarke Rubel. It is now led by the Glendora Historical Society, which has made continued efforts to preserve and protect this creation for everyone to enjoy. Learn more.

Bailey House

As real estate agents and lovers of architectures, we have to highlight the Bailey House. This residential home was part of the innovative Case Study House Program. It is a Mid-Century Modern design with a rare steel frame construction. It has undergone a meticulous restoration and earned recognition by the LA Conservancy. Learn more.
