If you really want to learn about the history of architecture in Los Angeles, you should check out the Los Angeles Conservancy. We are major supporters of this local historical preservation organization. They provide many wonderful education programs. They spearhead meaningful restoration and preservation projects. They also offer special architectural tours and events throughout the LA area.
A Special Virtual Tour
We’re very excited about the LA Conservancy’s upcoming virtual tour to celebrate Black History Month. It is entitled “Building Community: Pioneering Black Architects in L.A.”
This special virtual tour will take place on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 6:00 pm. It will be a 60-minute presentation that you can attend online through a Zoom webinar. The cost will be $12 for the general public and $8 for Conservancy members. We highly recommend joining the Conservancy membership. It not only supports their ongoing programs, but you’ll have special access to many great member benefits and discounts.
What to Expect
This one-hour virtual tour will walk you through the history of black architecture in Los Angeles. It will highlight the influential careers of pioneering African-American architects such as Norma Merrick Sklarek, Paul Revere Williams and Robert Kennard—just to name a few. You will gain special insight on how many of these Black architects helped shape local communities through advocacy and architectural brilliance. These architects designed buildings while also representing the underserved communities to which they belonged.
The Architecture that Shaped LA’s Black Communities
Over the course of the virtual tour, you will visit five different Los Angeles locations spanning from Beverly Hills to the City of Compton. You will experience the architectural provenance of important buildings. Many of these historic and iconic buildings are known for providing positive spaces for Black communities.
