South Pasadena City Limit SignIn the late 1800s, the residents of South Pasadena voted to separate from Pasadena. They created a small, independent community of around 500 people. Today, there are roughly 25,000 residents of South Pasadena. This city is located in the West San Gabriel Valley, just between Pasadena and Los Angeles. It occupies only about three square miles.

A Rich Community History

South Pasadena was originally known for its excellent agriculture, and it has always been a popular tourist destination thanks to sites like the Cawston Ostrich Farm. It was originally opened in 1886 and was a major tourist attraction up until it closed in 1935. Much of the original brick structure of the factory and store is still standing today and is recognized as a South Pasadena Cultural Landmark.

The Raymond Hotel was another South Pasadena landmark that brought plenty of visitors in the early 1900s. It was the first major resort hotel in the San Gabriel Valley. These days, this city is more of a quiet, close-knit suburban community with a proud cultural history.

Natural Beauty and Timeless Architecture

South Pasadena is also known as the “City of Trees” because it is home to many different native California trees such as redwoods, sequoias, sycamores and oaks. When you combine this natural beauty with the distinctive architecture, it’s easy to understand why this is such a sought-after place to live.

Because South Pasadena offers charming architecture, natural beauty and suburban living all combined seamlessly together, it should come as no surprise that it has become a popular filming location for movies and television. Some of the most notable movies filmed here include Gone with the Wind, Freaky Friday and, yes, Nightmare on Elm Street!

Idyllic Setting

Many people don’t even know that South Pasadena exists as a separate city from Pasadena to the north. And, that’s just the way most residents here like it. They are able to enjoy their own slice of heaven in a small town with a rich history and idyllic setting. Everything about South Pasadena is truly timeless.
