La Cañada Flintridge is located just northwest of Pasadena in The Verdugos region of the Crescenta Valley—on the western edge of the San Gabriel Valley. It is nestled between the San Gabriel Mountains, Angeles National Forest, San Rafael Hills and Arroyo Seco. It is a small community by Southern California standards, with a population of just over 20,000 people.
La Cañada Flintridge History
It is known by most locals as simply La Cañada, though the city’s combined name has a unique history. The area was once called Rancho La Cañada by Spanish and Mexican settlers. When the city was incorporated in 1976, they combined the name of two local communities: La Cañada with Flintridge. Flintridge is named after the city’s developer, Frank P. Flint. The Flintridge part of town mostly comprises the parts of the city south of Foothill Boulevard.
A Desirable Community
La Cañada Flintridge is a community that boasts spectacular estates modeled after the English countryside. The city has a wonderful atmosphere with great mountain views, old oak trees and plenty of sunny days. La Cañada is known for its excellent schools, beautiful estates and warm sense of community.
What was once a sleepy horse town has become one of America’s most desirable zip codes. In 2015, Forbes ranked La Cañada Flintridge as the 121st most expensive city to live in the United States.
Out of This World
One of La Cañada’s most recognizable landmarks is the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. JPL is part of the California Institute of Technology and is a national research facility famous for its major contributions to space exploration. The Laboratory created America’s first orbiting satellite and the world’s first interplanetary spacecraft (Mars rover).
